This 1968 Porsche 912 coupe was bought as a project by the seller three years ago, and has been built into a Monte Carlo tribute car. It is now runs a 2.7L motor out of a CIS-equipped 1975 911 and features a number of upgrades that make this 912/6 well-suited for vintage rallies, street, or track use, including triple throat 40IDA 3C carburetors and S camshafts. A set of Deep Six Fuchs are included, along with a set of factory steel wheels. With approximately 3000 miles added since the build was completed, this Porsche has been sorted and is ready to be enjoyed. It is sold with a clean California title.
Vic Elford won the 1968 Monte in a 911 and this car was styled to resemble the 1960s factory Monte Carlo racers with bright Tangerine paint, rally lights, sponsor decals, and center-exit exhaust. The paint looks to shine nicely in photos but upon closer inspection the seller says there are several blemishes evident. If he were keeping the car he would repaint it to bring to the next level.
Originally painted Light Ivory, this 912’s body is straight with a few minor imperfections. The seller takes the car to Cars & Coffee-style events, and says it receives lots of attention.
This car is sold with both the “Deep Six” Fuchs and the set of steel wheels pictured. The car sits nicely on Bilstein Sport shocks that were recently installed at all four corners.
The car has been on track for lead-follow charity events, but has not seen any serious track time. The car is always garaged and covered when not in use.
The rally theme is carried through to the interior with a Momo Prototipo steering wheel, Rennline kick/toe panels, RS-spec lightweight carpeting, wood gear-knob on the upgraded short shifter, and a red-painted roll bar. The seats have been redone and remain in great shape.
The seller notes that he has not run the wiring for the oil pressure and level gauges, and they do not currently function. The odometer shows 12,747 miles, but the seller believes it has rolled over and total chassis miles are 112,747, though this cannot be confirmed.
The motor is a 2.7L CIS donated from a 1975 911. Extensive work performed during installation includes:
- Clutch pressure plate package (fitted for 2.7)
- ‘S’ camshafts
- Triple Throat 40IDA 3C carburetors
- Danske headers
- MSD ignition
- Distributor recurved by Barry Hershon of IAE
- Carrera tensioners
- PMO fuel rails, manifolds, and fuel pressure regulator (68’s did not have a return line, but one can be added)
- Turbo valve covers
The infamous “triangle of death” was addressed when the engine was swapped, however some additional oil leakage is noted by the seller. Seepage can be seen from the bottom main sump drain area, as well as a leak at the crank-seal. Partial documentation for the mechanical work adds up to about $5K and includes receipts for the carburetors, seals, and ignition and transmission services. The seller notes that the case has not been split as the motor was in good running order when he acquired it.
The engine is mated to a 902 4-speed transmission that is said to be in good working order. In addition to the aforementioned Bilstein Sports, the suspension has been modified with rear over-sized torsion bars and adjustable spring plates. The brakes also received new pads and rotors, in addition to rebuilt calipers.
This 912/6 has had a lot of work put into it. With a 2.7L engine, sorted transmission, newly freshened interior, suspension/brake work, and many custom details, this looks look like a great vintage rally car with a lot of curb appeal.
