In 2012 overlijdt de vader van Julien Borne. Plotseling. Deze gebeurtenis – tezamen met de geboorte van zijn dochter – maakte dat Borne besloot om even stil te staan bij hoe zijn leven er nu uitzag en de balans op te maken. Dat leidde hem uiteindelijk naar een triest uitziende Porsche 912 en een verlaten Frans huis op het platteland.
Borne racete jaren achtereen in de Franse Supermoto, risico’s nemen was hem zodoende niet vreemd. Hij nam het besluit om in het allang verlaten landhuis van zijn grootouders te trekken in een nietszeggende dorpje aan de rand van Parijs. Daar stortte hij zich op het herbouwen van klassieke Porsches, een naar de maatstaven van gezond verstand geheel nieuw soort risico.
Borne wijdde zich aan het herstellen van Porsches van het type 912, een auto die lange tijd ondergewaardeerd werd door Porsche-liefhebbers. Een opgedirkte Volkswagen, een platgeslagen Kever, een 911 voor armelui: de auto werd zelfs door merkliefhebbers niet ontzien in kritiek. Borne merkt echter terecht op dat de 912 zich langzaamaan wreekt. De auto is steeds meer in trek, zeker nu de klassieke 911 verloren lijkt aan de echte verzamelaars en steeds meer onbereikbaar wordt voor de gewone man.
Maar daar waar de auto door sommigen wordt verguisd, realiseren sommige liefhebbers zich steeds vaker hoeveel voordelen de 912 eigenlijk heeft ten opzichte van de 911. Spartaanser en dus lichter, minder pretentieus en relatief betaalbaar. En juist dat maakt de auto met de dag aantrekkelijker. “De 912 neem je eerder mee naar een familie-barbecue dan naar de golfbaan,” zegt Borne. “Het is geen auto om mee te showen, maar om van te genieten.”

While the 911 enjoyed a new air-cooled flat six, the 912 employed the air-cooled flat four used for so many years in the 356 to make it more affordable than the 911. As a result, enthusiasts traditionally haven’t viewed the 912 in as favorable light as the 911. But in 2014, as noted by Frenchman Julien Borne in this Petrolicious video(link is external), the 912 is coming into its own. »

The car looked virtually the same as the 911, but had the old flat 4-cylinder engine found in the earlier Porsche 356. In 2012, Julien Borne’s father died suddenly. This event – in tandem with the birth of his daughter – caused Borne to pause and take stock of his own life and priorities, an episode of reflection that ultimately led him to a sad-looking 1967 Porsche 912 and a dilapidated house in the French countryside.
Borne had been racing in the French Supermoto series for years, so he was no stranger to risk but his decision to move into his grandparent’s long-vacant farmhouse in a village on the outskirts of Paris and devote himself to rebuilding classic Porsches nevertheless required a new level of gumption on his part.
